CLOVERHILL

WHAT a Murphy’s Bar & Restaurant, Meigh sponsored July Monthly Medal we were treated to. The hot July might go down in the record books but the so to will this memorable Monthly Medal. David Hamill (8) was delighted with his best ever round of one under par to take the lead with a nett 61. Little did he know that two players both off 20 handicap on the same fourball were going toe to toe in a terrific battle for Medal glory. With Dr Patrick Allen losing a ball on hole 17 it gave his rival Patrick Treanor the decicive edge as the Crossmaglen duo overtook their other neighbour David in the standings.

THE new leading score was a nett 60 for Patrick “Clee” Treanor but the “Glee foe Clee” only lasted a few hours before the focus of attention turned towards Dundalk as Brendan O Rourke was bigging up his chances of the medal so he could join” Gilly” Martin Gill in the Gold Medal final with “Freebie” Larry O Rourke in the background for once ( I know readers will not believe this) saying nothing.

But the avid sportsperson that his is Larry let his golf do the talking as he went on to produce the golfing round of his life.19 handicapper Larry went round in a superb 76 only 6 over par to return a magnificient nett 57 which left all of us speechless in admiration for a truly terrific round of his lifetime for the affable Larry. The two Patrick’s Treanor and Allen filled the other two podium finishes whilst a 2 under 68 earned Colin Pilkington (2) the Gross

Next weekend Shane O Neill GFC Camlough have their annual classic. A 3 Person Scramble at £75 per team ans places can be booked by contacting the club or Shane’s. The members competition will be a singles stableford..

Third last week with 39 points Dubliner Clive Whelan (22) was determined to better that result and Clive was very” alive alive oh” as he returned a winning score of 42 points to capture his first BC Electrics, Dundalk sponsored Friday Open. Clive had 2 points to spare over Kris McKay (27) who was runner-up with last weeks second placed club Hon. Sec. Mark Shevlin (14) dropping down a place to third. Even the loss of 2 shots did not bother the jovial Dub who was just delighted to put one over his M&M’s playing regulars, Mark and Miceal.

Co. Armagh lady Bernie McBride is leading the July €100 Bonus visitors prize with 40 points with the last week of play for the Month of July this Friday. Friday Open Entry is Members £7 & Visitors £12 which includes 2’s.

Well used to putting names on peoples final resting stone Peter Byrne of Byrne Monumental, Crossmaglen sponsors of the Wednesday Cup sandblasted his name on the page of final qualifiers by winning the Front 9 Green Marker on Wednesday night. Peter blasted out from the sand from a greenside bunker at the last for a par to beat Larry O Rourke on the countback after both had finished with 24 pts. This Wednesday completes the last of the penultimate rounds to be played with the Back 9 Green in play.

Form is temporary, class is permanent” as too many shots Jim McDonnell returned to the Seniors winners enclosure on Thursday. Jim beat off Raymond Kelly on the countback with Noel Magill. As next Thursday is the last one for the month of July the competition will be 18 holes in the Golfer of the year Competition.

DUNDALK

CONGRATULATIONS to our senior panel on winning the Barton Shield Leinster title on Saturday in Mount Wolseley after beating Corrstown, Elm Park and Enniscorthy over the two day event. The players, caddies and managers put in a superb effort and their meticulous preparations certainly reaped dividends. A special thanks to all those who travelled to Tullow on Friday and Saturday to support the team. The team have now qualified for the All-Ireland Finals which take place in October in Thurles.

Declan Ward produced one of the best rounds of the years over the blue course to win Gerry Murray’s President’s Prize on Sunday in ideal conditions.

The 19 handicapper shot a seven under par 65 to take this keenly contested major by two shots from Conor Marron (25) with Bernard White (16) a shot further back on 68. They were the only three players out of a superb field of 212 to shoot in the sixties.

Ward’s round included a birdie at the par five index three seventh after he left himself with an easy putt following a superbly executed approach shot over the water from 170 yards.

However, he handed back the shots gained on seven at the next hole when he recorded a triple bogey seven after finding himself in bunkers on either side of the green.

A par at the ninth saw him turn in two under nett and a strong finish which saw him par four of the final six holes got him to seven under and he signed for what proved to be an unbeatable 65.

Marron covered the front nine in one under par and did better on the back nine as he recorded a four under par net total of 32 on his way to five under par 67.

Bernard White, who shot a 68 for the third best score of the day, won the Veterans Prize with Maurice Murphy (3) taking the gross prize after shooting a 73. Shaun Ward (11), Aidan Gaughran (13) and Martin McCaughey (21) took the category prizes.

This weekend sees the first round of Gerry Byrne’s Captain’s Prize taking place with the best scores from Saturday and Sunday qualifying for the second round on Sunday week. There sare still some slots available for both days on the timesheet and members are urged to book in as possible to avoid the disappointment of missing the biggest major of the year within the club.

Clem Walshe’s (5) 71 in the President’s Prize has propelled him to the top of the Golfer of the Year table after six rounds. His four best cards have given him a total of 287 which is four ahead of Danny Miele (11) with Neil Mulooly (6) two shots further back in third on 293.

Entries for Last Man Standing, which is a fund-raising for the juvenile golf programme, are now being taken in the Bar. Entry fee is €10.
