Floating cars and damaged ring at beach
A motorist had to have their car towed from the sea at Bettystown beach last week, after being caught out by the incoming tides. Rescue services have warned people to watch where they park, as the tides can rise very quickly and the car can become cut off very quickly.
Also despite recent successes at the sandcastle competition and sports days, the Beach Management Committee Laytown Bettystown Mornington is still battling vandalism on their strand.
A lifebuoy and its holder at the end of the boardwalk in Mornington was burnt between last Tuesday evening and Wednesday, along with a large area of burrows beside the Mornington Strand notice board.
‘ The blackened burrows are unsightly but will regenerate quickly enough,’ said a committee member, ‘ but the vandalism could mean a life lost’”
The fire damage also exposes the amount of litter, including bottles and cans, resulting from camping in the area.
Dunes in Bettystown and Laytown were subjected to fire damage recently, following a number of bonfires, and emergency services were on hand to control any blazes.
With conditions dry, warnings are again being issued to be extra careful when smoking or using a naked flame.
