LEDWIDGE DAY
The Francis Ledwidge Committee have put together a top class line up for their annual Ledwidge Day which takes place this Sunday, July 29th, in the Conyngham Arms Hotel at 3pm. It promises to be a wonderful afternoon of poetry, music and talks to commemorate Francis Ledwidge and the end of World War 1. Proceedings will open with an address of welcome by Collette McDonnell, chairperson of the Francis Ledwidge Museum Committee followed by an address from the newly-elected cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Cllr Tom Kelly. Ledwidge poems will be recited throughout the programme by Paul Murphy (Lament for Thomas McDonagh and Soliloquy), James Doherty (June), Collette McDonnell (A Soldier’s Grave) and Terry Wogan (At Evening).
Young Navan violinist Julieanne Forrest will play ‘Nocturne’ and ‘It ain’t Necessarily So’ by George Gershwin. Music will also be provided by the ní Mhaolain sisters, Katie, Sophie and Elizabeth, and by Rachel O’Malley, Mary Clarke, Eugene Gallagher and Frank Bruton. Shona Loughran and Terry McDonnell will sing The Green Field of France and the Ballad of Waltzing Matilda.
There will be a talk by historian Noel French on Meath and WW1 and Collette McDonnell will outline the exploits of the Martin Family during World War 1 , including those of Mother Mary Martin, Foundress of the Medical Missionaries of Mary. The Roll of Honour of Meath men who fought in the 1914-18 will be read by James Doherty.

Want to see the archaeological excavation at the Devenish Lands at Dowth. It is being opened to the public for the first time during Heritage Week by Devenish in partnership with UCD School of Archaeology. The excavation will be open from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19th. The event is suitable for children and parking is available. At the Devenish Lands at Dowth in the Brú na Bóinne World Heritage Site, agricultural science and archaeology are working alongside each other in this beautiful landscape that has been farmed for 6,000 years. The Devenish Lands at Dowth is an internationally-recognised research farm dedicated to sustainability and health. You need to book to see the excavation but, without booking, you can visit Dowth Hall, hear about its history, the excavation and the sustainable agriculture research work.
RURAL SOCIAL SCHEME
Meath Partnership is currently inviting applications from members of the farming community who wish to seek employment on the scheme in Meath. The primary aim of the scheme is to provide an opportunity for farmers or their spouses (and in some cases their children or siblings) to earn a supplementary income through employment in local community projects, primarily in the development of local amenities, facilities and services in rural communities. BOYNE MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Boyne Music Festival takes place from August 3rd - 5th, at Townley Hall, Slane Road, Drogheda. There will be a feast of chamber music, poetry, song workshops, tours and readings. SHANNON TO THE BOYNE
A 120km sponsored walk from Carrack On Shannon to Slane takes place on the weekend of August 26. It starts on Friday, 24th and finishes on Sunday, 26th. Participants can undertake the full walk or part of the way. A number of local charities will benefit, including Slane Tidy Towns, Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre and SOSAD. RATHKENNY 5K
Registration is now open for Rathkenny AC’s 5K road race and fun run which takes place on Friday, August 17th, at 7.30pm. This is a AAI approved chipped timed event on country roads around Tankardstown House and Rathkenny. €15 online entry (plus booking fee) for chipped runners, €20 to register on the evening (over 16s only), walkers €10, juveniles €5. WATER PIPE UPGRADING
The laying of 6k of pipe by Meath County Council in conjunction with Irish Water in Slane village is continuing and a traffic management system is in place with a stop and go system. There will be some water outages when connecting from old system to new with a three day notice given to householders and businesses.
HILL OF SLANE TOURS
Free tours of the Hill of Slane every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday at 2pm from the Hill of Slane car park. Tour is between 30 and 45 minutes. Tours at other times are available by arrangement and groups can also be catered for. Further details at www. facebook.com/HillOfSlane

DUMPING INCIDENT
There was another serious incident of dumping on the Hurcle Road sometime last Tuesday evening around tea time. The usual assortment of household rubbish was dumped at a gateway on Hurcle Hill. Reported to Meath Co. Council on the Litter Lo-Call line and by E-mail at 9.30 pm on the Tuesday night, the dump was investigated by the Council’s Litter Warden on Wednesday, and was subsequently promptly removed the following day. Thanks to Meath Co. Council for the swift action. There is an air of confidence that the investigation will secure the evidence required to proceed further with the matter.
MEATH HERITAGE CYCLE TOUR 2018
The Sport Ireland Meath Heritage Cycle tour returns for it’s 10th year on July 28th & 29th. Starting and finishing in Trim, the organisers anticipate in excess of 2500 cyclists will descend on the historic town for this weekend. The Sport Ireland Meath Heritage Cycle tour is made up of 3 distances this year—11km Family Spin, 50km Tara Loop and the ever popular 100km Royal Tour! The 11k Family spin takes place on Sat 28th with the other 2 distances taking place on Sunday 29th. You can register for the 11km Family Spin ONLY on the day. SET DANCING NEWS
Congratulations to our Set Dancing friends from Sandpit and Dunderry who took 1st and 2nd place respectively in the over 35’s , Full Set, Mixed Category (Male/Female) at the Leinster Fleadh in Bagnalstown, Co. Carlow recently. Sandpit, the Louth Champions, danced The Boyne Set, while Dunderry, the Meath Champions, danced The Merchants Set. Both teams were ‘ar feabhas ar fad’ ar an ocaid. We look forward to them performing at Fleadh Ceoil na h-Eireann in Drogheda in August. Comhghairdeas Sandpit and Dunderry. Two local Ceili Bands will perform at the Fleadh in Drogheda. Triskell play for the Sets Ceili in Mc Hughs on Thursday 16th August, while The Tara play for the Fior Ceili in St Joseph’s School, Mell on Friday 17th August.
