Poem on the Fleadh in Town

-

Welcome to Drogheda on the Banks of the Boyne, There is no nicer place to rest, wine and dine, History tells us you suffered ferocious hell, So enchanting now to hear the Tholsel Bell, 17 Strikes every hour to tell us the time,

Not too loud just a pleasant chime.

Strolling down West Street at your leisure, On a summers evening is such a pleasure,

It’s about time this town got Fleadh Ceol na HEireann,

It’s ready and waiting for such a fairing,

To the artists and masses a huge welcome to all, For this fair city in waiting, will have a ball.

There is going to be lots of craic agus ceol, Gladenning our heart and enriching our soul, Squeeze boxes and bodhrains filling the air, Jigs and reels in the town square,

Porter and ale flowing faster than the Boyne River, But just be careful, it’s not good for your liver.

Out the window you should throw all caution, And put these two years in super motion, Put Drogheda on stage and show its talent, Let’s be brave and let’s be valiant,

You should show the country of your ability, And warrant your entitlement to be a city. Des Lynch
