COLLON AND GARY KELLY CENTRE TO FLY LOUTH FLAG
‘PRIDE OF PLACE’ ALL IRELAND COMPETITION BID BY TWO CENTRES
ENTRIES from Drogheda and Collon will represent Louth in the “Pride of Place” All Ireland Competition.
Joan Martin, Chief Executive of Louth County Council announced that Collon will represent the county in the Population 3001000 Category and The Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre will represent the county in the Community Wellbeing Initiative category.
Both groups will be hoping to replicate the success of Louth in last year’s competition when Maria Goretti Foundation, Lordship won the “Community Reaching Out” category and Dunleer were runners up in the Population 2000-5000 category.
The purpose of the competition is to acknowledge the work being carried out every day by communities across the island of Ireland. “The competition is about showing respect and inclusion for every sector in our communities, young, old, rich or poor and creating communities to which the people are proud to say they belong”, according to Tom Dowling, Chairman of the Pride of Place initiative. The competition features entrants from every county in the island of Ireland and is now the country’s most prestigious community event.
The competition which endeavours to showcase community spirit across the island of Ireland, is organised by Co-operation Ireland, in conjunction with IPB Insurance. Speaking about the competition, Barry Eaton of Louth County Council said “We are delighted that the community of Collon and The Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre are representing Louth in this year’s Pride of Place Competition. It is a wonderful competition which showcases all that is best and innovative in communities throughout the island of Ireland. Louth County Council is working closely with all the different groups in Collon and we are confident that they will represent our county with pride. The Council fully appreciative the tremendous work which the Gary Kelly Centre carries out and the level of volunteerism within the organisation. We wish both entries the very best of luck”.
The Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre and the community of Collon are extremely proud to be chosen to take part in the Pride of Place competition and are eagerly awaiting the visit of the judges. Judging of the competition will take place on Tuesday the 28th August, with the awards ceremony taking place in Cork City Hall on Saturday 17th November.
