Town goes ‘green’ for Fleadh week

-

THE Green Fleadh Committee, in conjunction with the Fleadh Executive Committee, are making great strides to “green” the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Drogheda.

The committee is comprised of Louth County Council staff, members of the Drogheda Tidy Towns committee and representatives of the local business community.

Many of the local hospitality businesses which are located within the Fleadh Zone are taking part in the Green Fleadh Business Programme. The businesses took part in audits which will identify measures to reduce food waste, energy and water use, and increase recycling. The businesses which sign up will be recognised through an identifiable window sticker scheme, which includes the Green Fleadh logo.

Visitors to the Fleadh are encouraged to go green during the festival and public transport information is being heavily advertised to influence visitors before they begin their journey. They are being asked to walk when they get to Drogheda where possible as the town centre is very small and easily walkable! Shuttle buses will be provided to all Fleadh venues, campsite and to the town centre. Bike hire will also be readily available.

Green Fleadh branded plastic glasses will be available which can be reused. This was a popular initiative at previous Fleadh’s as they help to reduce the number of non recycleable plastic glasses going to landfill. Householders will also be targeted with Green Fleadh leaflets being made available to visitors to encourage them to go green during their stay.

Recycling is the main theme of Drogheda’s Green Fleadh. Free Recycling Ambassador Programme workshops will take place during the Fleadh in Drogheda Library at Stockwell Lane. The aim of this programme is to support people directly to reduce levels of contamination in household recycling bins and increase Ireland’s recycling rates.

The Green Fleadh Team will be based in the Fleadh Office in West Street during the week of the Fleadh. There will be a Waste Bin Challenge taking place outside the offices which will challenge visitors to segregate their waste, with small prizes on offer.
