Meath council ‘incredible’
MEATH County Council have been richly praised for getting the Boyne boardwalk back up and running within days of a devastating fire.
Up to 100m of the boardwalk were destroyed in a blaze, leaving major concerns that it would have to be closed off for the duration of next week’s Fleadh.
However, the council got to work on the clearing up project immediately and by last weekend, it was fully operational again.
For keen runner, Cllr Paddy Meade, it was a chance to praise the council for a stunning response to a major headache.
‘Meath County Council did an incredible job, just incredible,’ he stated. ‘Yes, it’s not the top class surface we became accustomed to, but they got it back in action and it’s all systems go.
‘It is a magnificent area on the Louth /Meath border and will be wonderful to show off during the Fleadh. There were a lot of people back on the boardwalk and they were delighted to see the job done,’ he added.
A GoFundMe page also brought in €10,000 as part of the reaction to the blaze that shocked so many people.
“The repair and restoration work needed will be extensive, possibly costing up to €200,000,” explained Boyneside Trail Committee member Eddie Phelan. “Funding for this work will need to come from Meath County Council and state agencies. But the money raised by the public is a clear sign that the community values this amenity and wants to see it restored as soon as possible.” The funds raised will be presented by the committee on behalf of community in the coming week.
