O’Dowd to host internet safety meeting event

-

FINE Gael TD, Fergus O’Dowd, is holding a public meeting on the topic of Internet Safety on Thursday 9th August at 8pm in the D Hotel, Drogheda.

Speaking at the event will be Ian Power, Executive Director of Spun Out.

Spun Out is Ireland’s youth information website SpunOut.ie. The website is run by young people, for young people. SpunOut. ie aims to empower young people with the information they need to live happy, healthy lives.

Deputy O’Dowd said: “I am pleased to be able to facilitate this event on internet safety. The reality is that most people now have a presence online. People of all ages must make sure they operate safely and securely in the online space. The advance of new technology means there is a gap in knowledge between parents and their children.

“Our children now have all a world of information, good and bad, in their hands. We need to have a conversation about how this affects our society. I want to listen to the view of parents in particular and hear what they have to say about keeping our children safe online.

“The Oireachtas Committee on Communications recently met with representatives of Facebook. It is important that we hear your views to help us ensure that social media companies are accountable and do all they can to protect younger users. It is essential that parents stay up to date and aware of what’s going on online.’
