SKRYNE GAEIL COLMCILLE 0-19 1-13

BEATEN in last year’s Division 2 Final, Skryne stepped up to the top grade in fine style with victory in the Division 1 decider at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday.

The town side led briefly in the opening half, but for the most part they were playing catch-up against a Skryne side that relied heavily on O’Rourke for scores.

The lively Seamus Mattimoe had the Kells men ahead on two different occasions in the opening half before Skryne opened a three-point advantage approaching half-time. However, they had to settle for a 0-10 to 0-8 lead at the break.

O’Rourke hit three points in the opening half, while Paddy Fox, the excellent Darragh Campion, Donie Ryan, Ian Davis, Conor O’Brien and Eoin Smyth also contributed to the Skryne scoring during that period.

The impressive Mattimoe hit four points for Gaeil Colmcille in that first half, while Brian Hanlon, Oisin Reilly and Martin Barrett were also on the mark.

Lar Wall’s side had the deficit back to the minimum at the end of the third quarter, but Skryne then produced a scoring spurt to go 0-16 to 0-12 ahead by the 48th minute. Mark Battersby, O’Rourke and Campion hit those quickfire points after Skryne keeper Des McAvinney had earlier denied Fionn Reilly.

The Kells side were back in the game when Brian Hanlon dispatched to the net from the penalty spot and they had a numerical advantage from there to the final whistle as Skryne defender Robbie Clarke picked up a second yellow card for the foul on Seamus Mattimoe that led to the penalty.

However, the Skryne men always seemed to be able to up the tempo when required and O’Rourke doubled his side’s advantage when he might have found the net. He added another point from a free and there were four between the teams when O’Rourke fisted over his ninth point of the hour following a poor kickout by Justin Carry Lynch.

Afterwards, the county vice-chairman John Kavanagh presented the Packey Mooney Cup to Skryne captain Paddy O’Rourke.
