Campbell takes third place in 5k
FRESH from his sixth-place finish in the National Senior 1500m, Dunleer AC’s Garry Campbell had another great run in last week’s Carlingford 5K Road Race hosted by Glenmore AC.
He finished third overall in 15:31, behind winner Craig McMeechan of North Down AC (15:13) and runner-up Conal McCambridge of North Belfast Harriers (15:21).
Dunleer’s next man home was 16-year-old Danny O’Brien who clocked 17:15 to end up third junior, and Karen Costello finished very strongly to place sixth woman and second Over-40 in 18:17.
Other great performances came from Pat Fitzpatrick (17:15), Fran Whelan (18:04), Pádraig O’Mahoney (18:17), Shane Lavery (18:57), Nicola Courtney (22:33) and Ian Carroll (28:21).
The juveniles ran very well also, with Matthew Fitzpatrick, Vanessa Brennan and Daire Mathews particularly impressive.
Elsewhere, Leon Eakin had a super race on Saturday in the Oldbridge House Parkrun.
Although one of the youngest participants, in the age 15-17 category, Leon finished the 5km with a personal best and a very convincing first place in a time of 19:18.
Meanwhile, Dunleer AC came very close to winning the visitors’ shield at the Boyne AC Sports, such was the talent and enthusiasm on display, with Ardee just pipping them at the post.
