St Peter’s all set for the popular Dromiskin 5k

-

ST PETER’S AC and St Josephs GFC are looking forward to hosting the fourth running of the very popular Dromiskin 5K at 7pm on Saturday September 8th.

This event has proved to be very popular in the past and has attracted some of the best elite runners on the road race circuit, along with casual fun runners and walkers.

All levels are more than welcome and everyone will receive the a very warm Dromiskin welcome on their arrival.

The event was officially launched on Tuesday last and present for the launch was Mr Michael Goode from Michelin Tyres PLC who are the main sponsor for this year’s event.

Entry is €15 which includes a long-sleeved technical shirt which was originally for the first 300, but as this number has almost been reached already the organisers are currently in talks with the shirt supplier in a bid to secure more.

For the first time ever, a bespoke medal depicting the famous Dromiskin round tower will be presented to all finishers also.

Race director Simon Allen said that it is the aim of both clubs to provide an event that athletes of all abilities will enjoy and they are encouraged to enter early as last year there weren’t any shirts for those who entered late.

However, entries will be accepted on the day, still at the same rate of €15.

Prizes will be presented to Senior men and women 1st, 2nd and 3rd; junior; and Over-40, Over-50 and Over-60 1st and 2nd.

There will also be a prize for the first club team of four for both men and women, along with spot prizes picked randomly from all finishers.

This Athletics Ireland approved event shouldn’t be missed and registration is available through either club’s website or on the Dromiskin 5K Facebook page. Information can also be found on the page - or call Simon on 0872626274 for further information.

Meanwhile, a busy weekend for the club started off with the Glenmore AC Road Races on Friday night.

As usual the Carlingford 5K was preceded by juvenile races. The first of these was the girls under 9 and Niamh Allen finished strong to claim the last of the ten finishers’ medals.

The O’Reilly twins Emily and Hannah ran very bravely out of their age, with both narrowly missing out on the medals in the girls under eleven race.

However, Dearbhla Allen had a really good run out of her age to claim a medal with a seventh-place finish in the girls under 13 race.

Probably the best run of the night for the St Peter’s club came in the boys U-13 race when Harry O’Reilly - who is still under twelve - finished in second place.

The girls under-15 race had three St Peter’s athletes, with all three coming home with medals despite being under 14. Niamh Brady led the club charge with a sixth-place finish, followed by Julie McLoughlin in seventh and Judith Bell in 10th.

The last Juvenile race had four St Peter’s athletes, with Mark Litchfield finishing in third place, Cian Gorham fourth, Sean Allen sixth and Rory McLoughlin ninth.

In the senior race Andrew Rogers rolled back the years with a sub 20-minute finish, closely followed by his younger brother Brendan.

Good strong running was also on display from high jumper Emily Rogers and also Catherine Rogers.

On Sunday the club had a crew of willing athletes compete in the lovely Drogheda sunshine at the Boyne Sports Day.

The performance of the day came from Dearbhla Allen in the girls under 12 600m. In what was a very entertaining race Dearbhla’s tenacity prevailed as she eventually claimed the silver medal.

Harry O’Reilly ran well to claim bronze in the boys under 12 600m, as did Sean Allen in the boys U14 800m.

Mark Litchfield ran bravely in the boys U14 100m and like Sean and Harry claimed the bronze. Ronan Dearey had a decent performance in the boys U14 Long Jump.

Tom McGrane took part in the Masters shot putt and won silver with his best throw for some time - 10.34m.
