Mary and Rita Mooney steal show
THE committee of Sandpit Social Club are deserving of the highest praise for the entertaining fare which they provided for their patrons at their second annual Concert in Sandpit Hall on Sunday night last.
The talent displayed was well above the average on a well devised and varied programme which included singing, dancing, recitations and music which came from stately accordions to lowly washboards. All contributed to the night’s fun. which sent the big audience home in happy mood.
Miss Crilly’s accordion band thrilled the audience with its capable and accomplished selections. The Mooney sisters, Mary and Rita, gave a nice rendering of two duets.
Michael Finnegan treated us to a nice selection on his accordion, and the ever-popular Irish dances were sprightly performed by Patty Wogan, Patricia Harmon. Maura Quaile and the youngest entertainer of the night. Margaret Reynolds, who danced a jig.
Derry McLeer treated the attendance to a fine recitation of The Queens. Vocalists included— Michael Carroll. Joan McEvoy, the popular balladsinger, and Donal Synnott and Owen Devine, who really stole the show.
Owen Devine, with his beautifully rich tenor voice, gave encore after encore, and well he and his guitar accompanist Donal Synnott deserved the applauses they got.
