Drogheda United put on a magnificent show for fans

-

THERE are very few words you could use to describe last Friday’s stunning FAI Cup win for Drogheda United.

If you were to talk to bookies and even some Drogs fans, they didn’t have a chance against Shamrock Rovers.

But on the night, every player rose to the challenge and they just outclassed their illustrious opponents and it should have been much more than a 1-0 win.

At times this season, it’s been hard watching First Division football, but on this performance, there are some lads on this United team well capable of stepping up - hopefully with Drogheda next year.

I met up with Francis Genockey on Sunday outside St Mary’s church and he was still in shock.

Francis is a big Rovers fan - but a Drogheda man at heart as he’s a big part of the Men’s Shed. But lads, I don’t know if you’ll see him for a while....

What the future holds for Drogheda United is very much in their own hands.

The new stadium has been approved and hopefully planning can start on it very shortly.

Then it’s a case of providing a team that can entertain, battle, give 110% and win big games.

Friday gave the loyal fans a taste of what can be done when the right ingredients come to the boil - perfection.

For now, United can bask in the moment - heroes all on a glorious night.
