Rathkenny draw comfort from share of spoils

-

BOTH these sides remain in contention for a SFC knockout spot following this draw at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday evening.

However, either side could still be involved in a relegation play-off, depending on the outcome of the final round of games.

Jack Gore’s injury-time point from a free gave Diarmuid McCarthy’s side the precious share of the spoils after Brian Meade had earlier halved Moynalvey’s twopoint lead.

There was little to choose between the sides at any stage, with Moynalvey’s having just two contributors to their scoring, Cillian O’Sullivan and David McLoughlin.

Moynalvey might have added to their goal tally, but keeper Colin Curtis and Keith Timmons were excellent in the Rathkenny rearguard.

Caolach Halligan and Jack Gore pointed Rathkenny ahead early on, before Cillian O’Sullivan opened Moynalvey’s account with an excellently taken goal on nine minutes.

Rathkenny hopes suffered a blow when they lost Halligan to injury on 13 minutes, but with Jack Gore on target from a number of frees and Curtis producing a fine save close to the break Rathkenny led 0-7 to 1-3 at the interval.

David McLoughlin scored all his side’s points in the opening half and added another one shortly after the break, but he too was forced off with an injury second half.

The sides were level - 0-9 to 1-6 - heading into the final quarter and Moynalvey led for the first time following O’Sullivan’s converted free on 54 minutes.

Rathkenny responded, though, leaving both sides with plenty to play for in the final round of games. RATHKENNY: in the MOYNALVEY: WEDNESDAY AUGUST 15
