Boyne AC Sports hit new heights

ATHLETES from near and far descended on Drogheda’s Lourdes Stadium last Saturday to ensure a record attendance at the annual Boyne AC Sports.

Blessed with fine weather conditions, all the athletes taking part gave great performanc­es to the crowd’s delight.

For the host club, Naiya Semple got the medal tally off to a flying start with a bronze in the Girls U-9 60m sprint, and she followed this up with a silver in the 300m.

Shruti Prasad took bronze in the U-10 sprint, while Chloe Cooney was the first to cross the line in the 500m, taking the well-deserved gold medal.

Sholah Lawrence completed a fine double when winning both the U-11 Girls 80m sprint and 500m, while Kate Culhane took the bronze in both those events.

Eimear Cooney made light work of the U-12 Girls 600m, taking the gold medal, while in the U-13 sprint it was bronze for Nina King Abor.

Saran Meite proved she can mix it up, with a silver medal finish in the U-14 100m sprint and gold in the longer 800m race, with Eadaoinn Carroll taking the bronze on that latter occasion.

Another double win went to the in-form Caer NiGhibne, in both the U-15 100m and 800m.

In the boys races, Nathan Robertson was first to the post in the U-8 60m sprint and also won the 200m race, while in the U-10 sprint Callum Byrne took the silver medal.

It was a sea of yellow in the U-11 sprint as winner Ledley King Abor was followed home in second and third by teammates Alex Robertson and Oliver Carolan respective­ly. In the longer 500m it was silver for Alex, with Lorcan Forde Dunne taking the bronze.

Alex Devine easily won the U-13 sprint, with clubmate Aaron Fennell in third, while Neil Culhane took the silver in the U-14 800m.

Brothers Leon and Graham King Abor both took gold in their respective 100m sprints, while in the Junior Men’s 800m race it was gold for Ruarcan O Gibne and silver for Tadgh Everitt Thompson, who also took gold in the 1500m race.

With the track events out of the way, attention then turned to the field, and Callum Byrne finished third in the U-10 long jump.

Oliver Carolan led the way in the U-11 turbo javelin with a 21.79m throw and also took silver in the U-12 long jump with a fine leap of 3.91m.

In the girls turbo javelin event, silver went to Sholah Lawrence and bronze to Kate Culhane.

Aaron Fennell threw a massive 38.96m in the U-13 javelin to easily take gold, while Euan Canniffe took a silver in the U-16 event.

Ruarcan O’Gibne proved he’s not just a distance runner as he threw 35.73m to win the Junior Men’s javelin, while it was gold for Francis Ekhator in the Master Men’s javelin.

Ardee & District were once again winners of the Pat Walker Shield for best visiting club, while the U-13 Boyne AC relay team were the proud winners of the first Killian Ekhator Memorial Trophy for the winning Under-13 team.
