MACBRIDE P&P

DESPITE an initial short shower of rain, the MacBride Doubles Matchplay semi-finals took place in perfect weather conditions on Wednesday evening last.

Both matches were very close and there was little to separate the teams on the turn for the second 18, with some great pitch & putt played. Results were as follows:

Match 1: Alan Cluskey & Paddy Murray beat Greg Hoey & Andrew Meegan 4&3; Match 2: Mark Donnelly & Joe Reilly beat Keith Smyth & Liam Flood 5&4.

Well done to all the players and congratula­tions to the winning teams. Thank you to those who came to support our fellow club players.

Alan & Paddy will play Mark & Joe in what promises to be a great Doubles Matchplay Final, which takes place on Wednesday 22nd at 6pm.

Congratula­tions to the Ladies and Gents Louth inter-county teams who had success at the Leinster Finals last weekend, with four teams finishing in the medals.

Entry sheets are on the club noticeboar­d for the LDM Matchplay which takes place in Channonroc­k on September 1st and 2nd.

MANNAN CASTLE

MANNAN Castle Golf Club celebrated Captain Tommy’s Prize over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The Captains Prize competitio­n was played over 36 holes with 150 playing over the weekend. Captain Tommy did not miss a beat; he was there to greet all the players and to wish them well in their endeavours to qualify for the playoffs. The course and the greens were in excellent condition, slick and fast and they caught a lot of players out with their speed. After three days, the top twelve qualified were known and ready to play the final 9 holes in the playoff to win the coveted Captain’s Prize.

The qualifiers were Ciaran Marron 81pts, Shane Donoghue 80 pts, Gene McEnroe 79pts, Val Donoghue 75pts, Patrick Brady 75pts, Lenny McKitteric­k 74 pts, Mick Johnson 74pts, Shane Corr 73pts, Vincent Duffy 73pts, Donard McCabe 72pts, Terry Kiernan 72 pts and Eamon Sherry 71 pts. When the playoff was decided, it emerged that Ciaran Marron held onto his lead and finished with a total of 96pts to take the 25th anniversar­y Captain’s Prize, charging through the field into second place was Val Donoghue finishing on 95pts, Shane Corr collected the gross with 67pts, Shane Donoghue picked up the third place prize with 94pts.

Captain Tommy called the assembled members and guests to order, he thanked his family of their support during his captaincy, also Lady Captain Gill, President Oliver and the vice captains, and everyone that assisted in making the club such a success.

Captain Tommy pointed out that the first Captain’s Prize presentati­on was held in a local hotel and now Mannan Castle Golf Club has a facility that can accommodat­e any event. The most recent was the Northern Standard under 18 boys competitio­n.

Ciaran Marron was called forward to receive his prize from Captain Tommy, he received a rapturous round of applause, saying that he was nervous and now he was even more so, Ciaran thanked Captain Tommy for the Prize and that he was delighted to be the 25th anniversar­y winner, Ciaran also thanked Lady Captain Gill for her guidance while he was a junior and also thanked his playing partners and to their ability to find his wayward shots that help him to bring in the winning score, also receiving praise were the custodians of the club and to the green keeping staff for having it looking so well. Ciaran finally wished that everyone to have a good night.

A special thank you goes to Val Donoghue for organising a book on the competitio­n, and as usual turned a profit for the Club Developmen­t Fund.

Mannan Castle are holding a special social night on the Saturday August 18, there will be a marque erected in the car park, starting off with a BBQ, guests include The Magician Ruari O’Connor, Brioni Gallagher, Cantemus Choir, there will be a ‘LIP SYNC’ challenge between the Ladies and the Men’s club (bring your ear defenders) and lots more. M.C. on the night is Colin Walker. Tickets are only €20 each, money well spent.

Mannan Castle Junior Golf Camp was in full swing in the week leading up to Captain Prize Weekend, with over 70 youngsters taking part, learning the skills of the game from Club Profession­al Kevin McGivern. The camp had a surprise visit from Monaghan GAA Superstar Conor McManus. A massive thank you to Conor for his visit and for the time he gave to the juniors by answering their questions and posing for selfies.

PEADAR’S SOCIETY

THERE was a full turnout of members last Saturday in Greenore for Captain Paddy Begley’s big day.

In a break with tradition Paddy decided, this year, to award a ‘Captain’s Team Prize’. As it transpired Paddy’s team of himself, Brendan Kelly and Michael McKeown just managed to win by virtue of a better back nine over the runners up Pat McCann, Brendan Duffy and Joe Whelan. A great day was had by all and a memorable presentati­on night was held in McGuinness’s Bar after the golf.

Members are reminded that deposits for Bundoran are now being taken and must be in by End August.
