NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK

National Heritage Week takes place this year from August 18th26th. This year’s theme revolves around deepening the connection between people and heritage and this is explored through “Sharing Stories”.During Heritage Week, a large number of events will take place throughout the county. Dunleer will play host to a couple of exhibition­s: School folklore stories from the 1930’s will be on display in Dunleer library from 18th to 25th August ( late opening, Tuesday 21st August 6.00pm- 8.00pm ). Also, Stories & Art exhibition of Buildings in Dunleer by 1st Year students from Scoil Ui Mhuiri, Saturday mornings, 18th and 25th August. Further details next week.

TERMONFECK­IN MACRA NA FEIRME

The 2018/19 Macra year kicked off with a meeting on Wednesday August 8th where plans for club outings, events and competitio­ns were discussed. The club will be having a bowling night in Funtasia, Drogheda on August 22nd at 7 30 for a bit of craic and to see who has the skill for the upcoming county bowling competitio­n. New members are welcome to attend.

FLEADH CEOIL

It is great to see that there are a number of local traditiona­l groups taking part in the 2018 Fleadh Ceoil. The Sandpit Mixed Set Dancing team will be dancing at 12 noon on Saturday August 18th in Our Lady’s College, Greenhills. Local trad group Triskell will perform on the Gig Rig in Bolton Square on Wednesday August 15th and will also perform in Mc Hugh’s on Thursday August 16th. Again we send our best wishes to all those competing. Meanwhile Pairc Naomh Feichin is an official campsite for the Fleadh. Shuttle buses will operate from there to Drogheda at a cost of €2.

FLEADH POETRY TRAIL

The “Drogheda Creative Writers” have organised a Poetry Trail which is one of the events in the Fleadh Ceoil. The poems are displayed in various shop/business windows throughout the centre of the town. Some are poems by local people. Two poems are by Connie Mc Evoy, one is displayed in the Gentleman’s Barber Shop, Narrow West St, and the other in Zen Tattoo, Peter St. Patrick Dillon (son of the late Lord Dillon, formerly Rath House) has some on display and there are poems from Des Parkinson, another local man.

SEAPOINT PITCH & PUTT

There was no competitio­n in Seapoint last weekend due to Laytown hosting their Open Scotch Foursomes. A Juvenile competitio­n was held at Seapoint last Tuesday August 7th. Members are asked to check the notice board for all entry sheets. On August 25th and 26th, Seapoint Pitch & Putt will proudly host the Irish Life PPUI Irish Internatio­nal Pitch & Putt Open. COAST TO COAST.

Very well done to the five local participan­ts-Tom Flynn, Frank Flanagan, Nuala Hagan, Treasa McGlynn and Paddy Matthews, in the 250 km Coast to Coast walk in aid of the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre. The walkers began in Clarinbrid­ge Co. Galway on August 3rd and finished at Baltray on Sunday 12th August. Many thanks to all those who supported them. TEA ON THE LAWN

Next Sunday August 19th, the Parish Pastoral Council will organise “Tea on the Lawn” of the Church of the Immaculate Conception following 11am Mass. This year the event celebrates the World Meeting of Families. Lovely refreshmen­ts not to mention tea and coffee will be available. Earlier in the year, the Parish Pastoral Council ran a competitio­n in both Parish Schools and the results will be announced on the day. There will also be a “guess how many” competitio­n on the day

HERITAGE WEEK 2018

National Heritage Week 2018 takes place from Saturday 18th to Sunday 26th August inclusive. This years Heritage Week theme is ‘Share a Story, Make a Connection’. The Heritage Council says ‘Our cultural heritage belongs to everyone so we’re encouragin­g everyone to get involved in Heritage Week and learn more about heritage and make a new connection with it by visiting a museum, getting to know the history behind a local historic monument or exploring Ireland’s unique landscapes and wildlife habitats’.

GRANTS OPPORTUNIT­Y

Community Facility Energy Upgrade Grants are available to Community Groups under the 2020 Leader Programme. Project upgrades which may be supported under the Programme include: Solar PV Panels, Insulation Upgrade, LED Lighting Retrofit, Solar Collectors, Boiler Upgrade or Replacemen­t, Rainwater Harvesting Systems, and Door and Window Replacemen­t. This is a great opportunit­y for Community Groups to secure funding from € 2,000 to €30,000 to carry out upgrades to their Community Facility. SET DANCING NEWS

Two local Ceili Bands will perform at the Fleadh in Drogheda. Triskell play for the Sets Ceili in Mc Hughs on Thursday 16th August, while The Tara play for the Fior Ceili in St Joseph’s School, Mell on Friday 17th August. By the way, Paddy and Oliver’s CD ‘The High Level’, is available and well worth having. Please support the Fleadh, it may never be at a closer venue.
