Abbey Ballroom soccer exhibition

- By BARRY LANDY

A new football-inspired exhibition, ‘ The Abbey Ballroom indoor football: An Oral History’ was officially launched at the County Musuem in Dundalk recently.

A collaboration between Drogheda Local Voices, Drogheda Musuem Millmount and County Musuem Dundalk, the exhibition recounts the eclectic history of the Abbey Ballroom which was once the home of the successful men’s and women’s indoor football leagues in the 1960s.

The league ran in Drogheda between 1966 and 1967 and a great night was had at the exhibition launch where fond memories of match night atmospheres were recalled and shared.

Among those in attendance at the launch were those who played, organised and attended matches and competitions during that era, from Drogheda, Ardee and Dundalk. Those present represented teams such as the Rollintones, United Ladies, the D Siders, Bank United and the Casuals, the most successful women’s team in the North East in that time.

Susan McGuinness, one of the former players, brought along the Casino Showband Trophy, the trophy they claimed at the very first competition held at the Abbey Ballroom.

The exhibition itself runs until the end of October. For more information on the exhibition, contact County Musuem Dundalk on 041 9392 999 or e-mail info@dundalkmusuem.ie.
