Rose Hanratty and her four-legged Dake chicken was very tasty story!

-

A remarkable story from 1951 about a four-legged chicken, hatched in The Dale.

Mrs. Rose Hanratty, The Dale, Drogheda was eagerly awaiting the arrival of new chicks and 12 out of a “sitting” thirteen eggs had just cracked open to reveal twelve strong, healthy chickens - but at number thirteen all was silent.

While examining the last egg to see if it was bad, Mrs. Hanratty detected a faint pecking and, sure enough, a short time later the shell gave way.

“I got the fright of my life,” said Mrs. Hanratty. “All I could see were legs!’”

At first she had the impression that there were two chickens in the shell but, as it transpired, there was only one— but it had four legs!

A few hours later a “Drogheda Independent” reporter—who had heard about the chicken, with a certain amount of scepticism—saw it cuddled in Mrs. Hanratty’s hand. The four legs and feet were perfectly developed.

Whatever happened to the four-legged Dale chicken I wonder?
