LAYTOWN RACES

This year will be the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Laytown races. The races began in 1868. Another big event was the Boyne regatta which was held annually. The Regatta was in existence much earlier than the Laytown races.

The Regatta was always held at high water on the Boyne, and the Laytown races were and still held at low water. The powers that be set up a meeting regarding the possibility of holding a horse racing meeting in conjunction with the Boyne Regatta which would be held on the same day.

As the Regatta was extremely popular there was always a full house to witness this event. The main reason as to why therace (probably) committee decided to hold the races on the same day as the Regatta was that people who attended the skilled oarsmen Boynebattle would also have time to visit the Laytown races because the Regatta would be finished three to four hours before the horse racing began. A shrewd move. Sadly, the Regatta came to a halt many years ago. Some of the Regatta oarsmen I knew like Jim and John Durnin, and Conor Lynch. Jim was Georgie’s (R.I.P) and also Fergus’s and John were their uncle.

Back to the present. The Laytown races will be held on Sept 6th, First race at 3.30 pm. Children free, adults €10 and elderly adults €6. The Laytown meeting is unique in as much that it’s the only meeting that’s run on a strand under the rules of the Turf Club.

Every facility under the sun will be available to all racegoers, even the most discerning. No stone is not turned as regard facilities
