THE RATTLE ON THE BOYNE

To tell the truth, I knew very little about “The Fleadh” before I heard word of it coming to Drogheda. Incrementally, as the big week approached, I picked up little snippets. These “snippets” seemed to suggest that if Kilarney (in mid summer) and LMFM’s Green Scene had a baby, then that young leanbh could justifiably be christened Fleadh.

Being a proud Monasterboice man was always inextricably linked with a certain amount of smugness towards “our town Drawda”. We went to school there, worked there, shop there, are entertained there and perhaps most importantly, EVERY Saturday, our family ates in the cafe (The Moorland) that quite simply has no equals in the Chester Bun League.

So, you see, my opinion could contain a wee smiggeen of bias and my propensity to exaggerate could come slightly into play when I give my verdict on the last week.

Bar Pope JP’s visit in ‘79, this was the best gig EVER in the area. The pedestrianed streets, the thousands of people strolling on them,. Masses strolling, not in silence, but in a reverend manor, as if they knew they were experiencing something special. No bells, whistles (bar those of a tin variety), no flashing lights, no cyber space, no foot space. Just a classy town with thousands of classy people.

It was georgous in it’s simplicity, it was as remarkable as it was breathtaking and quite frankly, something we, as a family, including the two doggies, will never, ever forget. Time to replace 12th of July’s Battle of the Boyne commemorations with 12th of August’s RATTLE ON THE BOYNE.

Drogheda and it’s people, take an extended bow. The spotlight was on you, but you outshone it.

BIG WIN FOR LOCAL RIDERS

Congratulations to Piperstown Equestrian Centre, who won the SOCK (Supporting Ovarian Cancer Knowledge) team showjumping competition last week . The event was held in North County Dublin and the winning team of Linzi Sullivan , Conor McBride , Miriam Walsh and Jack Geraghty, won the Valerie Keating Memorial Cup, after an exciting jump off . The fact that no less than 20 teams competed on the day really emphasises the wonderful achievement of this local team. In fact, two other teams that Piperstown had entered, finished in very creditable 5th and 6th places. Hats off to you guys n girls and well done in supporting a wonderful charity.

MONASTERBOICE TOURISM & TIDY TOWNS.

The above held its 6th annual poetry, music and song gathering on Friday 3rd of August. The event began with a talk and walkabout at the famous monastic site at Monasterboice followed by a great night’s entertainment in Drumshallon Forge Heritage Centre.

Ten talented people recited poems; some read their own compositions, while others recited their favourite works from wellknown poets. There was plenty of music and song on offer as well and lots of opportunities for audience participation. All were also treated to some sean nós dancing - a new departure for our group.

Eoghan Mc Evoy and Bartle Woods played some traditional Irish music, while singers Páid O’Hare, Mary Maguire, Kieran Devine, Siobhán Seberry and the Fieldstown Church Choir entertained with some wonderful songs.

Monasterboice is looking absolutely magnificent at the moment and Seán McCormack, chairperson, gave an update on the work and achievements of the group (see below) and thanked all members for their interest and dedication.

Refreshments were served by the hardworking Tidy Towns’ committee members.

A massive thank you goes out to all the wonderful people who entertained on the night and also to everyone who attended and helped to make this a truly memorable event.

Through the hard work and dedication of the volunteers, Monasterboice won An Endeavour Award (Tidy Towns), A Special Merit Award (Louth Looking Good) and A Gold Medal (Litter League) in 2017. It’d be great to keep the gold medal in the Litter League which would be possible if everyone does their bit by binning the rubbish and keeping our beautiful Monasterboice clean.
