Dunleer Credit Union to link with Drogheda

NEW LINK TO BE RATIFIED AT MEETINGS THIS THURSDAY IN GROVE AND THE ‘D’

- BY HUBERT MURPHY

DUNLEER Credit Union is to transfer its assets and liabilities to Drogheda CU, if the proposal is passed by members at a special meeting this Thursday in the Grove House.

The move follows ‘positive engagement’ over the past year between the two bodies.

In a statement to members, Dunleer CU chairperson Frankie Clare said that the organisation had spent the last five years considering how best to ‘protect and develop’ the local service into the future.

It was felt the best way was to work with other credit unions.

‘Dunleer parish members, as part of a wider Drogheda CU community will retain their community nature through a local office and a local member committee, like the GAA, under every county jersey, there’s a local jersey.

‘At the same time Dunleer parish members will reap the benefits of being part of a larger credit union, a broader range of services, lower interest rates and longer opening hours through a growing branch network,’ Mr Clare explained.

He said he sees the move as a ‘positive step’ for the Dunleer organisation.

The latest unaudited accounts of Dunleer CU as of June 30 this year shows that Dunleer had €26m in total assets and total reserves of €6.6m.

Drogheda already has a link with Bettystown and Trim branches. Under that, members can do their business at any of the associated offices.

Geraldine Gilsenan, chairperson of the Drogheda CU, informed members that they see the link with Dunleer as an ‘ideal opportunity’ to grow and develop services to members locally.

A special meeting of the Drogheda CU will be held in the d Hotel, also on Thursday at 7.30pm, to ratify the new link with Dunleer.
