Stephentakesfirstvows

- By HUBERT MURPHY

THE Augustinian Church on Shop Street was at the very heart of the Order on Sunday last when Brother Stephen Shields took his first vows in the community.

He is the first student to take his vows since Fr Colm O’Mahony in Galway 10 years ago.

He is a native of Downpatrick and is a secondary school teacher, having worked in Northern Ireland and Spain in the past.

Stephen’s mother Mary and his brothers, Paul and Damian attended on the day.

Music on the day was provided by the Augustinian Gospel Choir.

‘ This is an important moment for Bro Stephen, his family, and the community here. For one year he will take the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. For his next stage of formation Bro Stephen will be moving to our community in John’s Lane, Dublin where he will do a Masters in Theology in Trinity as well as some prison ministry,’ the Augustinian community remarked. ‘We wish him all the best and know he will be a regular visitor to the Augustinian here in Drogheda.’
