Saints edge entertaining final

-

THE hotly anticipated Senior League plate final between St Annes of Togher and Mattock Rangers lived up to its billing as St Anne’s edged an entertaining contest at Ballygassan.

The home side were first on the score sheet and showed their hunger for victory by competing for every ball. Mattock are no stranger to big events and put it up to St Anne’s with a feisty response.

St Anne’s adjourned at half time with a deserved but close lead of two points, 2-2 to 1-3, but powered on in the second half, which was no mean feat considering they had the bare minimum of players with no substitute options.

Their win was more or less decided following a series of unanswered points from Denise Moynagh, who although carrying an injury, bossed the midfield, and helped secure the victory.

The last five minutes were tense with Mattock’s Jane McKeown launching a series of long balls in, but St Annes survived the onslaught, with some incredible defensive work and saves by goalkeeper Una Carragher to secure a 2-8 to 1-4 victory.

The shield was presented to St Annes captain Marianne Hullen, by Seamus Capplis, Louth Camogie County Board PRO, who thanked both sides for an excellent and wellfought match.
