Ted Russell had quite a year!

January 1962

-

THAT HE WAS PLEASED to see a number of members who had been at the first annual meeting of the club at this, the 16th annual general meeting, was stated by Mr Dick Cheevers, outgoing Chairman, when he addressed the annual meeting of Monknewtown Branch Macra na Feirme, which was held at Messrs. Corcoran’s Hall, Rossin.

There was a good attendance, including a number of new members.

Mr. Cheevers went on to state that these loyal members of such long standing had succeeded in putting the club on a high pedestal amongst branches in the county. It was now the duty of the younger members to remain loyal to the branch, especially in the important aspect of attendance at meetings. He appealed to the young people in the area who were not members to come into the fold.

He said that some people put forward the excuse that they were too busy at football etc., to become members, but not many had been as busy as one of their members, Mr. Ted Russell, last year.

Mr. Russell had won a Co. medal with their Debating team, and had also annexed a Leinster and All-Ireland football medal with the Louth team. They would like to congratulate him on this wonderful achievement, said Mr. Cheevers.

Referring to the recent statement by the Minister, Mr. Smith, Mr. Cheevers said that it was wrong to look upon Macra na Feirme as a rival to N.F.A., or as contributing without usefulness to the multiplicity of farming organisations to which the Minister referred. Macra na Feirme was the organisation which trained the younger members of the farming community until they reached the stage where they could become useful members of N.F.A. as landowners, in their own right.

Mr. Cheevers went on to congratulate Ardcath Branch on being the first Meath club to bo featured on Irish T.V..

Mr. Dessie Russell, out-going Secretary, in his report spoke of the wonderful help he had received from all the members and in particular, Mr. John Scanlon.
