LATE EILEEN NANGLE

Sympathy is extended to the Nangle family, Fennor, Slane, following the death of Eileen (née Hanley) on Monday, August 20th, at the Mater Private Hospital, Dublin. Formerly from Pallaskenr­y, Co Limerick, Eileen is survived by her husband Mel, son PJ, daughter Valerie, grandchild­ren Pádraig, Áine and Daragh, daughter-in-law Mary, brother Donal, sisters-in-law, brothers-inlaw, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends. Eileen’s funeral Mass took place in St Patrick’s Church, Slane with burial afterwards in St Erc’s Cemetery.

FR JOE IS BACK

Former parish priest of Slane and Monknewsto­wn Fr Joe Deegan received a warm welcome when he arrived back in the parish to celebrate Mass last weekend. Fr Joe is home on holidays from China where he is based at present. As well as attending to his priestly duties Fr Joe also got some time to enjoy two of his main pastimes, cycling the roads of the county with his friends from Slane Spinners, while he was also sighted belting out a few tunes with the Chapel Street Gang at the Fleadh in Drogheda.

SLANE FOLK FESTIVAL LAUNCH

The Johnstons Folk Music Festival committee will launch the 2018 festival in Lynch’s Lounge, Main Street, this Saturday evening, September 1st, at 9.30pm. Music will be provided by the local traditiona­l Irish music group The Chapel Street Band, and all are welcome, with free admission.

The Folk Music Festival in this its eighth year will be held in the village the weekend of September 14th. This year the opening festival concert on Friday, 14th, will feature Kieran Goss, with special guest Annie Kinsella. Kieran is one of Ireland’s leading songwriter­s and performers and he has a huge fan base right across the globe.

His live performanc­es are a real musical treat and those attending his Slane concert won’t be disappoint­ed. Kieran will perform the opening half of the concert solo and will be joined on stage for the second half by harmony singer Annie Kinsella, herself a really talented performer in her own right. The Saturday evening concert will feature local artist Eugene Gallagher.

Following in the footsteps of the Johnsons Folk Group Eugene has been performing since the age of 15 at local music venues as well as in the UK and Germany. This will be his first Irish concert following his return from very successful tours in Canada where he performed to over 1500 at concerts in Alberta, Calgary, Vancouver and Banff.

Both concerts will take place in St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Slane, commencing at 8pm. Concert tickets are available from the Hub/Tourist Office, 041 9824000 or email brescu@gmail.com The festival concludes on Sunday afternoon, September 16th, with an open air concert from 3pm in the Village Garden.

THREE COUNTY CYCLE

Navan Road Club will hold their annual Three County Cycle for the ARC Cancer Support Centre this Saturday 1st September. The spin will start at 10am from The Village Inn in Slane, and some of the areas taken in will be in Lobinstown, Drumconrat­h, Tallanstow­n, Ardee and Woodtown.

Along the way the cyclist will place a wreath at the spot just outside Drumconrat­h where their good friend and cycling colleague Paul Healion tragically lost his life in a road accident. At Woodtown the group break for refreshmen­ts in Donoghue’s Bar where Maria O’Connell who is a great supporter of the ARC Centre will have a warm welcome for all.

LOUGH DERG

ADDICTEDTO­DANCE

Addictedto­dance classes are back in Slane Youth Cafe and enrollment takes place on Friday, September 7th, 4.30 pm - 5.30pm. For four to 11-year-olds, with dance, singing, drama and much more. To book a place call Aisling on 085 7581047.

CLUB SYMPATHY

Slane Spinners Cycling Club has passed a vote of sympathy with the O Caithain family following the recent sad passing of Pól who was a member of the club since it was founded in 2014.

YOGA WITH BRENDA

Yoga for the Autumn - classes commence on Monday, October 8th, and continue every Monday for six weeks. Hatha beginners/ improvers from 6pm - 7.15pm and Hatha mixed level from 7.45pm - 9pm. Cost is €60.

A seven week programme commences on Tuesday, October 9th, - Hatha beginners/ improvers from 9.45am - 11am. Cost is €70. There is also a seven week programme commencing on Thursday, October 11th - Restorativ­e Yoga suitable for all from 7.30pm - 8.45pm. Cost is €70.
