DROGHEDA UNITED ATHLONE TOWN 3 1

DROGHEDA United Under-19s were a man down to Athlone for half an hour of this league game but still emerged with all three points at sunny United Park last Saturday.

The Drogs were leading 1-0 on 40 minutes when influential midfielder Eoin McPhillips got his marching orders for an injudicious tackle which earned him a second yellow card, but after surviving a penalty award and conceding an equaliser, they finished strongly to earn victory as Athlone also finished with 10 men.

From the kick off the Drogs exerted a firm grip in midfield, with McPhillips distributing the ball well and Gabi Aghinita, Levi Boardman and the always dangerous Jordan Adeyemo creating plenty of chances up front.

On nine minutes Aghinita turned beautifully just outside the box on the left-hand side but then shot over the bar. However, the Drogs did take the lead on 22 minutes when Adeyemo beat three players on the right-hand side of the box and hit a brilliant low shot past the goalkeeper.

On 35 McPhillips hit a great free from the right which flew just past the post, and two minutes later he hit a great shot which came back off the post and was cleared.

However, disaster came for the Drogs shortly after when McPhillips - perhaps frustrated at not C: Laytown Utd v Lusk Utd, 11.00; Stamullen v Skerries Town, 10.00.

The Drogs held out until halftime, but on the restart Athlone attacked against the 10 men and the home side were forced onto the back foot and faced a stern test of character.

On 55 minutes Athlone were awarded a penalty for an ill-timed tackle in the box, only for keeper Malachy Doyle to dive to the right Under-13

Athlone’s equaliser came four minutes later, though, as a low shot dribbled into the net despite Doyle’s best efforts.

The Drogs defended resolutely against an Athlone team who seemed to be gaining the upper hand at that stage.

However, Tom Adeyinka was introduced for Adeyemo and he posed a different type of physical challenge for the visiting defence, and after a brilliant attack on 65 minutes Aghinita chased a cross from the left and hit a brilliant shot across the keeper to give Drogheda a 2-1 lead.

Shortly after, the Drogs were awarded a free kick just outside the box, which resulted in Athlone being reduced to 10 men, and this proved a double blow for the away side as Boardman struck the resultant free kick to the corner of the net.
