Visual arts not being ignored

-

IT’S hard to believe that Nuala Early’s forthcoming exhibition in the Droichead Arts Centre is her fist solo effort.

“Labour of Love”, which opens on September 6th and runs for a month, is indeed that; an autobiographical journey, with each sculpture telling a story, expressing an experience Nuala had as a pregnant woman.

“I see forms in nature that speak to me of the human condition. I see something and have an immediate emotional connection; a spark is lit, and I have to express what I see and feel,” explains Nuala, daughter of the late well-known writer and campaigner of the same name.

‘Full of life’ and ‘Ready to Drop’ ; ‘Starting Out’ is about the intimacy and hope a couple feel when they are expecting their first baby, right through to separation and marriage breakup in ‘ Reflection on Separation’.

Supporting the development of local artists is a key part of Droichead’s vision and Eimear Murphy is the proud recipient of their First Solo Award 2018 for recent graduates in the North East Region, and will showcase her first exhibition SHAPE. HEAP, THING’ from 18th October to 17th November. And you too could see your work on display in the gallery. Combined with this they have an open call out for print artists to submit work for their group exhibition in November which will be curated by Artist Dorothy Smith.

The deadline is 14th September for submissions so there’s still time to apply!
