John Collins was top pool player

SINCERE regret has been evoked over a wide area by the death last week of Mr. John Collins, Trinity Gardens, Drogheda, after a short illness.

Deceased, who was 50 years of ace. was a fowl butcher and had been, until 12 months ago, in the employment of his late uncle, Mr. L. Duggan, fowl merchant, Drogheda. He then was employed by Associated Merchandis­e, Dublin, until his death.

A well-known and much-liked personalit­y, the late Mr. Collins was one of Drogheda’s outstandin­g billiard and snooker players, in both of which games he won many trophies. He was also a very wellknown figure at local whist drives and took a very keen interest in all sports.

A member of the Irish National Foresters since he was a boy, he was one of the longest serving members of the Drogheda Branch.

Of a quiet and very friendly dispositio­n, deceased had made numerous friends, all of whom greatly deplore his demise.

The funeral to St. Peter’s Cemetery, on. Friday, was one of the largest seen in Drogheda for many years. The very large cortege was representa­tive of all sections of the community, and testified to the high regard in which deceased was held. Rev. J. Lennon, C.C., officiated at the graveside. The chief mourners: were Mrs. Babe Collins (widow) ; Messrs. Jos., William and Ken (sons) ; Emma Gladys (daughter) ; Miss May Collins, Mrs. N. Campbell, Mrs. T. O’Hagan (sisters) ; Mrs. J. Kerr (mother-in-law) ; Mrs. L. Duggan (aunt) ; H. Kerr, William Kerr, N. Kerr (brothers-in-law) ; Mrs. J. O’Neill, Mrs. B. Ford, Mrs. O’Brien (sisters-in-law); Jimmy Collins, Tom Morgan, Gerard, Jim, Tommy, Pat and Christie Morgan ; Jim, Vincent, Frank, Denis Duggan ; Mrs. C. Ryan, Mrs. T. Rice (cousins) ; Mrs. P. Quinn ; Misses Florrie, Elsie and Muriel O’Neill (nieces) ; Eamon Campbell (nephew) ; J. O’Neill, M. O’Brien and C. Ryan (relatives).
