Mayor of town should just not be a ‘support act’

TIME TO GET THE POWER BACK Mayor should not be ‘support act’ for chairman of county council

-

IT’S time to restore the role of Mayor of Drogheda to its proper place and ‘not a support act for the chair of the county council.’

That’s the view of Senator Ged Nash who this week wants to see legislation approved in the Dail to bring Drogheda back to being a seat of power.

The Labour party are proposing the move on Wednesday, but will need cross party support to change the law.

He says the new Drogheda council would have 15 members and would be responsible for Drogheda and its environs and it would have power to compulsory purchase derelict and vacant buildings for housing.

‘It would also restore the status of our Mayor to that of First Citizen, not a support act for the chair of the County Council,’ the senator claimed.

‘It would mean that Drogheda would take back responsibility for its own affairs.’

Phil Hogan abolished Drogheda Borough Council and other Town Councils across the country in 2014, but the former TD admits that was an error.

“This was a mistake, and we admitted to this in the 2016 election manifesto where I made the full restoration of Drogheda Borough Council a central feature of our election manifesto. The only way to restore power to Drogheda is to change the law. Our Bill, which we hope will be supported by Fine Gael, Sinn Fein, Fianna Fail and Independents would see the full restoration of all of the functions and status enjoyed by Drogheda before Hogan’s disastrous ‘reform’ Act.’

He says the new Drogheda council would have 15 members and would be responsible for Drogheda and its environs and it would have power to compulsorily purchase derelict and vacant buildings for housing.

“It would also restore the status of our Mayor to that of First Citizen, not a support act for the chair of the County Council.

“It would mean that Drogheda would take back responsibility for its own affairs and be able to ring-fence money raised in the town for services for the people of the town.

“Efforts to secure city status will come to nought if we do not, at first, re-establish our Council. I am appealing to all Louth & East Meath TDs to do the right thing for Drogheda and vote for this Bill,’ he stated this week.
