Ttle defence in jeopardy after narrow defeat

-

NEWFOUNDWELL TRIM CELTIC 0 1

FOUR months ago Newfoundwell and Trim Celtic required a play-off to separate them when both sides were deadlocked at the end of the Premier Reserve campaign for season 2017/2018.

On that occasion Newfoundwell came out on top with an injury-time winner, but this time it was Trim Celtic who took the honours with a slender one-goal victory.

The same two sides look to be heading towards another close encounter to decide which team will take the Premier Reserve crown for the second time within the same calendar year, but Trim have put themselves in the driving seat following this success at DIFE.

The first notable chance fell to the home side when, following a neat passing movement involving Mason Moran and Ciaran Carroll, the latter’s first-time effort found Colm Neary on the edge of the box. He struck what looked like a goal-bound effort, but Trim netminder Conor Ryan diverted the ball away for a corner.

Trim tried to respond and Oisin Devlin twice went close in the first half, sending one effort narrowly wide and being denied by ‘Well keeper Dean Moran on the second occasion.

The scoring breakthrough came on the hour mark when Trim substitute Kian Malone threaded a pass into the path of Devlin who was bearing down on goal, and on this occasion he made no mistake when striking home from 10 yards, and despite a few scares at the other end Trim held on for a narrow victory.
