SUNDAY’S Captain’s Charity Day competition: 1st 1st Denise King 33pts, 2nd Mary Kennedy 32pts.

CLOVERHILL

THE smile on the face of Club Captain Paddy Malone at 6-45am on the morning of his “big day” was one of satisfaction that the correct decision to postpone because of the very adverse weather 3 weeks previous was the correct one as it was a brisk dry morning with no rain forecast at all. With the course in immaculate condition, extra fast greens and a few evil pin positions it was going to be very interesting to see what the scores from the top 12 players plus ties would come in at the make it back out for the third 9 playoff holes.

As the scores were recorded on the big screen those on the 37 point mark were sweating on qualification with 3 groups still to finish. Two of the last trio Jarly óg Burns (8) and David Pilkington (2) returned 38&37 pts respectively to take the qualifying group for the playoff to a total of 19 players. Leading Qualifier with 41 pts was Paul Kelly (6) followed by 6 40’s led by Brendan Hughes (21), Martin Hollywood (26), Raymond Kelly (17), Christopher Reel (14), Benny Tierney (11), Ollie Reel (19). A lone 39 got Conor Walker (10) through ahead of an all Silverbridge trio Kieran Crummy, Jarly óg and Pete McCreesh on 38pts. With only 10 players with 38 or more it opened the way for the octet on 37 points to qualify led by Shane O Neill (11), Damien Reilly (13),Raymond Flynn (13), Justin Byrne (11), Niall McDonnell (12), David Pilkington (2),Barry McGreevy (14) and first man out that morning Barry McKeown (11).

Holes 10,11,12, 16,17,18,1,6,7 (3 par 3’s, 3 par 4’s ,3 par 5’s) are used in the order given and indexed accordingly 1-9 with half your handicap allowance in operation. Amazingly for the fourth year in a row the destiny of the Captains Prize came down to the 27th hole the Par 3 Seventh so tight was the contest. Ollie Reel holed for his par to put pressure on Brendan Hughes who had knocked his birdie attempt that uncomfortable 3 foot past. Under intense scrutiny from the boisterous gathered masses couple with the unimaginable pressure Bessbrook’s Brendan coolly slotted home the winning putt which gave him a w total of 22 points for his third 9 holes. Brendan finished top of the pile with 62 points one better than runner-up Ollie Reel with Paul Kelly third and Jarly óg in fourth place. David Pilkington was the Gross winner with Paul Kelly the leading qualifier. The Front 9 was won by Jamie Duffy 21 pts the Back 9 Conor Walker 25 pts and the Third 9 Barry McKeown 20 pts. EDDIE Rogers won the final cup of the season on Sunday when he shot the only sub-par round of the day to capture the Knights of Malta Cup.

PLAYING off four, Rogers shot a one-under par 71 to edge out Ciaran Daly (18) and Trevor Giff (11) by one shot on a day when slick greens and a strong wind provided a stern test for the 160 strong field.

ROGERS went through the opening nine holes in level par gross as he shot seven pars, a birdie and a bogey with the birdie coming at the par three ninth.

MORE birdies followed at the par five 10th, and par three 13th but as the wind picked up the going got tougher and he bogeyed the 11th, 14th, 15th and 18th to come home in 39 gross. That gave him a gross score of 75 and a nett score of 71 and set an early clubhouse lead that wasn’t bettered. DALY edged out Giff on countback to take second overall with the latter winning Category 2 while Terry Conlon (6) and Derek Teather (16) took Categories 1 and 3 respectively. Padraig Greenan claimed the Juvenile Prize while Senior Panel member Neal MacKell (2) took the Gross Prize with a 74. THE Knights of Malta Cup was the 11th and final qualifying round in the Golfer of the Year competition and once the dust had settled Clem Walshe (5) emerged as a clear winner after compiling a seven round total of 502. That worked out at an average score of 71.7 which is excellent average. PETER Rogers (1) and Conor Curran (2) were joint second on 512 which was one shot better than Junior Cup winner Neal MacKell (2) as the low men filled the top four slots.

THE schedule for the AIG All Ireland Barton Shield Finals has been announced by the Golfing Union of Ireland. The semi-finals will take place on Thursday, October 4, at Thurles Golf Club, Co Tipperary. Dundalk will face Munster champions Kinsale in the first semi-final at 08:20 with the other semi-final between Clandeboye and Athenry taking place at 08:40. The winners of the two semi-finals will meet in the final the following day, Friday, October 5, at 10:15.

IT is hoped that as many members as possible will travel to Thurles to support our senior panel in their quest to win the club’s first ever national pennant at senior level and only the second men’s national title in the club’s 113 year history. A table quiz in aid of the Senior Panel will take place on Thursday, September 27, in the Clubhouse at 8pm. Entry fee is €30 for a four person team. A great night is promised as the countdown to our very own Trip to Tipp begins in earnest.
