Lecture to mark Highlanes 12th birthday celebrations
HIGHLANES Gallery, Drogheda and the North East’s Municipal Gallery marks 12 years this coming week with a lunchtime gallery talk this Friday 5th October at 1pm, focussing on the development of the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection and its founders Bea Orpen and Terry Trench.
Ian Anderson, Gallery Invigilator, will deliver the lecture. Ian has fond memories of the two magnificent Gabrielle Ricciardelli landscape views of Drogheda, painted in the 18th century, and commissioned by Drogheda Corporation. As a boy he recalls seeing them regularly in the library and marvelling at the opportunity to look and explore them. Join him for a perfect lunchtime break for an introduction into the Municipal Art Collection and its wonders. The talk is free, and booking advised on Eventbrite. Highlanes Gallery is also to receive a new work to its Collection. At a ceremony this week, its board and staff will receive a new work, a diptych titled, Mono, by artist Sean Cotter, for the Collection. Highlanes Gallery received Full Museum Accreditation in July 2017 and continues to thrive with the support of Louth County Council and the Arts Council who have recently commented that ‘ the Highlanes acts as an exemplar for what a regional gallery can become. It has only been established for just over 10 years but is one of the leading providers of visual arts experiences to the public in Ireland. It is critical to the arts ecology in Ireland.’
