Highlanes rocks for a night of culture
ACROSS Ireland Culture Night was marked with late openings, happenings and events, where the public were invited to visit for the first time, or indeed revisit a much loved place, to view and engage with all of the arts.
The team at Highlanes Gallery also marked World Alzheimer’s Day and chose to screen a modern classic novel-turned-film, The Notebook, in the main gallery, and served with pizza and liquid refreshments. There was a great attendance and those gatherered also listened to a short post-screening talk from Hilary Kelly who delivers Highlanes
Gallery’s monthly Azure Gallery Programme, for people living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Ann Short, from the Drogheda and South Louth Day Care Centre was also on hand to talk about their clients who have enjoyed the gallery since the Pilot Programme over three years ago, and to remind all that the welcome from the whole gallery extends to Relish Café where each month, the Memory Café is held.
The Texaco Children’s Art Exhibition also remained open with many children, parents and grandparents, visiting together and marvelling at the
imagination and skill on show. The evening ended with a fabulous performance of folk band Kern, with Brendan McCreanor, SJ McArdle and Barry Kieran, fresh from a US Tour, and after their captivating opening performance witnessed by the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina, as part of the Showcase during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Incidentally, the Fleadh Cheoil still top of the audience’s chat with great anticipation of more traditional music both at Highlanes Gallery and across Drogheda this autumn.
