Church is key to Collon look
COLLON 2018 MARKS: 292. 2017 MARKS: 287.
What the judges said: ‘ There are many buildings and structures of interest in Collon. St Peter’s Church is a magnificent historical building that dominates the centre of the village. The surrounding graveyard also provides it with a wonderful setting although the dilapidated iron railings on the boundary to the street were noticeable. The Catholic Church is also an
impressive structure with its truncated tower and natural stone finish. However, we feel (like adjudicator in 2017) that the absence of planters at the entrance or within the church grounds is a missed opportunity.
‘ The terrace opposite the Parish Hall is similarly impressive with Donegan’s deserving of praise for its well-maintained appearance. Further down, the terrace adjoining St Peters Church also caught our eye. Here, the old Bar and Restaurant stands out with its fresh coat of paint and traditional design. Elsewhere, Matthews Pub and the Garda Station are complimented on their good standard of presentation.
‘Mathews Pub stands out with its well-stocked window boxes providing an explosion of summer colours. The landscaped bed of seasonal flowering plants beneath the name stone at Papal Drive also looked well and it helps to enhance the entrance to this residential area. Colour planters at the Square and in Doire Beag were also appreciated.’
