Duleek keep Tully bid on track

-

DULEEK made light of their struggles in the league to record a cup win for the second consecutive week as they reached the last 16 of the Tully Bookmakers competition on Sunday afternoon.

Manager Pete Brennan had a strong side out and they proved just too strong for a hard-working Hazel Lane who just lacked a cutting edge in the final third of the field.

Duleek had the benefit of a strong wind at their backs in the first half and it took just 10 minutes to break the deadlock as an inswinging Colin Woods corner kick picked out Jamie Flaherty who glanced a header past the Hazel Lane keeper.

The second goal was also scored in the first half and it came

after Cormac McGroggan skilfully dribbled towards goal before being taken down on the edge of the box. Duleek felt the foul was committed inside and it should have been a penalty, but ultimately the referee’s decision to award just a free kick was irrelevant as Sean Kennedy planted a superb free kick into the net for 2-0.

Woods and Matthew Noone also had the ball in the net in that first half, but they didn’t count as the official failed to play advantage on both occasions.

Duleek were sufficiently comfortable in the second half to allow the manager to use all five of his substitutes, including four at the one time, and among them was Conor Murtagh who had trials with Manchester City and Derby County as a young teenager when he was with Drogheda Boys.

Hazel Lane did create a couple of chances in the latter stages, sending one shot wide and forcing Duleek keeper Adam Byrne into one decent save, but despite the First Division outfit’s best efforts they couldn’t force a goal that might have led to a nervy finish for the Premier side.
