St Patrick’s win Inter title and Pat Collier is the star

Sept 1963

-

THE MEATH INTERMEDIATE champions of 1963 are St Patrick’s of the Stamullen-Jolianstown area of East Meath.

The climax to 12 years of endeavour came when referee, Mr. Tommy Mooney of Skryne sounded the final whistle at approx. 3.15 p.m. in Pairc Tailteann, Navan, on Sunday afternoon.

At that stage the East Meath lads had a three-point advantage over their gallant opponents, Kells (1-6 to 1-3). For P Dixon and J. Power that moment was a duplication of a similar one that has faded into the past, for they are the only remaining members of the team who figured in the last triumph registered by St. Patrick’s in the Intermediate grade—way back in 1951.

Rev. P. Tully presented the Meath Association of London Cup to the.Captain of the winning team, This was the first time the Cup had been presented on such an occasion, and who better to receive it than Pat Collier, who had run himself into the ground in his efforts to sway the game in his team’s direction. Pat played a wonderful storming game in the second half especially. He was here, there, and everywhere, and his free-taking too was a wonderful asset to his team.

J Power’s frees had St Pat’s level at 0-3 to 1-0 at the break before Bobby Russell set up J Collier for the lead score. E Reilly punched a goal and that proved the difference at the end.

P. Dixon was a most competent goalie for the winners, while S. Kennedy and J. Kealy were sound defenders in the last line, with P. Collier and J. Ludlow working hard.

ST PATRICK’S—P. Dixon, P. Russell S. Kennedy, J. Kealy, J. Ludlow, T..Murray, P. Collier, A Whelan, M. Lynch, J. Collier, P. McCormack, B. Russell, E. Reilly, T. Russell, and J. Power. Sub. J. Elmore for A. Whelan.
