DID YOU KNOW A MARGARET HOGAN NEE BYRNE.

The following is a piece from a Dublin man, Tom Cox, seeking information on a relative of his, who is buried in Monasterboice. When one delves into the subject of family histories, there are millions of similiar stories and jig saw pieces to be put in place, just like Tom’s, but this one is HIS. He’d dearly love any info on Margaret or her relatives. He’s visited the graveyard, got some great leads from some “wonderful Monasterboice people” as he put it, but would like more. So whether you are reading this in Ballymackenny, Ballinasloe or Baltimore and have an inkling on the life of Margaret or her relatives, Tom would love for you to have a chat with him. Here goes....

The Margaret Hogan whose relatives I am hoping to track down in Monasterboice was born in Knockmantha in 1881. She was born Margaret Byrne to Patrick Byrne and Bridget Byrne (nee Mullin). Margaret Byrne married John Hogan in Dublin in 1915. They lived in number 33 Prussia Street. They did not have any children. John died in 1937 and Margaret died a widow in 1970. They are both buried in Monasterboice Cemetery. John’s name is on the headstone but Margaret’s is not. They are buried in the Byrne plot near the Tower.

11/11/1873. Patrick Byrne of Knockmantha married Bridget Mullin of Knockmantha in the Chapel of Tenure Monasterboice. Patrick was 35 years old and Bridget was 25 years old. They had eight children; Bridget-born 1875. Married John Mohan in 1900 Patrick-born 1877 Annie-born 1879 Margaret -born 1881. Married John Hogan in 1915

Kate-born-born 1886. Married Patrick McGeough in 1915 Thomas-born 1888. Rose-born 1890. Emley-born 1893. Prussia Street housed the control offices for the Dublin Livestock Market which traded from the mid Seventeen Hundreds until the early Nineteen Seventies. It was the biggest Cattle Market in Europe in its day. There are lots of stories told of cattle being driven to the docks along the North Circular Road. Several members of The Hogan family, both men and women from Ticknevin Carbury County Kildare worked in the cattle Market. They worked for the Gavin Low company. Gavin Low was a Dublin Magistrate and one of the business men associated with the cattle Market. He had a cattle farm in Ticknevin Co Kildare which the Hogan family looked after. The Hogan family moved to different farms in Rathcoole in the mid 1920’s but John and Margaret stayed with the cattle market and lived in number 33 Prussia Street. John died in 1937 from heart failure and Margaret died in a house fire in 1970 aged 89. Margaret’s, death notice states that she is to be buried in Monasterboice Cemetery. In 1970, Margaret had surviving Sisters, Nieces and Nephews according to her death notice. Prussia Street, Gavin Low and the Cattle market are mentioned in James Joyce’s Ulysses a number of times ie. Page 380 and page 626 on google.

Mrs Mary McKeon lives in Rathmore Carbury Co. Kildare and is a niece of Margaret and John Hogan. Mrs McKeon is 89 years old and remembers visiting Margaret in Number 33 Prussia street in the 1940’s. She lost touch with Margaret and has no memory of John. I spoke to her recently and she was not aware of Margaret’s death. I was born in Carbury myself in 1951 and my family were distance relations of the Prussia Street Hogans. There are Hogan families in Carbury to this day but they are not related to the Prussia Street Hogans.
