Meade Potato spread the love about humble spud!
CELEBRATIONS for National Potato Day started early this year for Meade Potato Company and students from St. Oliver’s Community College Drogheda.
A group of 19 Agricultural Science students escaped the classroom to visit the potato harvest in Togher, learn more about potato production and do some ‘gleaning’ of the harvest afterwards.
Once Meade Farm Manager Conor O’Malley explained the basics about potato growing, the students got busy ‘gleaning’, picking up the crop left behind after the harvester.
The potatoes gleaned will be sent on to FoodCloud community foodbank and distributed to charities for people in need.
“The feedback has been that this is a super way for students to learn about the potato and to enjoy the community spirit of helping those in need – all at once,” remarked Jeni Meade of Meade Potato Company. This represents the end of a month of activities by the Meade farm to celebrate the potato including sponsorship of the Clonmellon Potato Festival, tours, social media competitions and radio giveaways.
