Paul Carrie led the mighty Emmets

January 1966

-

When a Parish has waited to celebrate success in competitions under the aegis of the County Board G.A.A., one would naturally enough expect that such an event be celebrated in style . . . but even a seasoned chronicler of G.A.A. affairs sent by the “D.I.” to cover last Sunday night’s “do” in the Neptune Hotel, Bettystown, organised by Glen Emmets club from Tullyallen, was more than a little taken aback by the lavishness of the festivities. It was truly a memorable occasion, and nothing but the highest credit must go to the club’s obviously very energetic committee led by chairman, Mr. Dick Cheevers, and secretary, Mr. Larry McGrane.

The Emmets had plenty to celebrate on Sunday night—they were winners of the 1965 Second Division Championship (beating Stabannon

Parnells in the final); winners of the Ranafast Cup (beating the’ holders, St. Bride’s and, in addition, they were winners of the Wolfe Tone Cup (as victors of the Drogheda area, MacArdle Cup); and winners of their own sponsored tournament (beating Sean McDermotts in the decider).

As well as the three Cups (McEvoy, Ranafast and Wolfe Tones),. a total of 46 medals were presented; and 25 mini cups (Glen Emmets Tournament).

Skipper of this all-conquering Glen Emmets XV (they tasted defeat only once in a total of 22 outings) was Paul Carrie. .

Loud applause greeted the announcement that the club had, in recognition of the special part in the victory programme played by two very staunch mentors, In Larry McGrane and Nick (‘Boiler’) McGuinness, decided on making them special presentations. Chairman, Dick Cheevers, obviously spoke the mind of everyone

in the gathering of around two hundred when, in a tribute to the one and only Larry McGrane from Rossin (In the Co. Meath), he commented that were it not for “Larry’s perseverence down through the years, this night would not have been possible.”

Another lustre to the occasion was the presence’of County Board officers, Messrs. J. L. Reilly (chairman), N. Marry (vice-do.), and P. Kearney (secretary); as well as Rev. Sean Qulnn, C.C., Pointzpass (a former chairman of the club), and Rev. Fr. McNally, C.C., Tullyalleh,

Regrettably, Mr. Jim Murphy, the club’s energetic vice-chairman , was prevented from attending.
