Odyssey up there with the best of the RPGs

-

It has been a long time since the Assassin’s Creed series stopped pretending it had anything to do with the nuances and subterfuge of actual assassin titles a lá Hitman or Dishonored. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey wanders even further into the realm of Action-RPG than its predecessor, further cementing the new direction of the series.

Odyssey’s game world is staggeringly large. Boasting the biggest and most detailed map of the entire Assassin’s Creed repertoire, Odyssey’s world is as varied as it is beautiful. From rolling seas to arid desert and cities of brilliant white marble, Odyssey is a showcase of both incredible ambition and artistic prowess.

It’s important to mention how ambitious this game is, because ambitious games come hand-in-hand with flawed games. It’s a necessary evil to craft titles as jaw dropping as Skyrim, Breath of the Wild, Grand Theft Auto 5 et. al, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey suffers from the same consequences of its ambition.

Draw distance in Odyssey is odd, never quite seeming to capture the expansive view. Texture pop-in is also frequently noticeable, as well as syncing problems with audio. There are a number of larger issues as well, such as getting stuck in the world’s geometry.

By and large, however, these issues do not happen with enough frequency to really “break” the game or render it unplayable. At worst, these are all minor niggles in a wonderful experience.

Odyssey allows you to choose between male and female protagonists: Alexios and Kassandra. For the most part, their stories are engaging and worthwhile.

The acting is even better, with the facial animations taking center stage, truly selling the struggles and emotions of the game’s characters.

Unfortunately, the main story is packed with so much worthless filler quests and errands that the wait time between the best character moments can often be painfully long.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is easily the greatest game released in a venerable series of brilliant titles. There is just so much to do and see that it simply can’t be put to a finite amount of words.

New systems such as the levelling and perk system, as well as a jaw-dropping amount of loot and items truly elevate Odyssey to the status of a true RPG. Well worth a purchase for gamers from all walks and tastes.
