FINAL COUNTDOWN.

Next Sunday, in The Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda, the place will be awash in a sea of blue, the “sky” variety of Newtown Blues and the darker version of The Mairtins. Lets hope us Monasterboice folk won’t be Signing The Blues at around 5pm on Sunday evening

Although both clubs had convincing wins in their respective semis, our Drogheda neighbours will take to the field, wearing their metaphoric favourites badge, with a good deal of justification, However, Monasterboice people have never turned their backs to a challenge and Naomh Mairtin will most certainly not.

Next Sunday has been brewing since 1988 and is the classic day of destiny, a day the likes of Jemmy Shevlin, Jack Mulroy, Patsy McGuire, Jim McDonnell, Paddy Winters, Don McCullough, my own dad, Ben et al, would have loved to have seen. A day that Brendan Reilly and Shane Whelan should be seeing. A day that the rest of us should be thankful that we will see.

These days don’t come around often, so enjoy this week, treasure Sunday and hopefully, come Sunday evening one of (no, scratch that) THE best footballer that Monasterboice has ever produced, ie JP, can call himself and his teammates LOUTH CHAMPIONS. Sounds good, doesn’t it.

FINAL PIECES OF THE JIGSAW.

For the past two werks, I ran a piece regarding a Margaret Hogan, nee Byrne, who, as far as could be ascertained, was buried in Monasterboice in 1970. Margaret had been in Dublin since her late teens and, other than that, the details about her family were a tad sketchy. A relation, Tom Cox wanted to know where she was buried in Monasterboice and the whereabouts of any, if any, relatives. Delighted to report that fantastic progress was made on all counts, as a result of discerning readers getting in touch. It was a lovely story from Tom, and thank God, seems like a great outcome. A real testament also, in this age where cyber space rules, that the power of the auld local paper, can still hold sway. Well done all.
