THERE has been much shock and sadness at the death last weekend in St Vincent’s Hospital of Philip McCabe, head of the international association of beekeepers.
A man devoted to his art, as an environmentalist he was hardly matched and his death has been felt around the world, such was his influence.
Born in Newbliss in Monaghan, Philip lived in Termonfeckin McCabe, and became President of Apimondia, the world beekeeping federation, in 2015 at the world congress in Daejeon, South Korea. Philip had also been President of the European Commission for Beekeeping for a number of years.
His father and grandfather were also beekeepers, so the art was very much in his blood.
Philip was a key player in bringing Prince Albert of Monaco to Drogheda last year, as they both shared a great love of promoting environmental protection on a worldwide basis.
The world governing body of beekeepers, remarked, ‘ The world beekeeping community is in mourning. Our president Philip McCabe died this morning Saturday, October 20, 2018 from a serious illness. His dedication and work in the Apimondia Federation have been exemplary. Rest in peace...’
The Federation of Irish Beekeepers Associations were equally saddened. ‘It is with deep regret that we wish to advise of the death of Philip McCabe a great beekeeper and friend to all beekeepers. Philip was the president of FIBKA when Apimondia came to Dublin and was the current president of Apomondia . His loss will be felt by beekeepers all over the world.’
Ziya Sahin, President Turkish Beekeeping Association, added, ‘‘We will never forget him, remembering his wonderful and gentle soul will forever remain in our hearts. May He Rest in Peace..’
Philip was predeceased by his daughter in law Tania and grandson Zac. He was the beloved husband of Mary and loving dad to Aidan, Deirdre, Gregory and Ciara. Very sadly missed by his wife, sons, daughters, son in law Martin, daughter in law Martha, grandchildren Ben, Adam, Sam, Harry, Philip, Laura, Dylan, Max and Ivy, brothers Seamus, Declan, Kieran, Brendan and Padraic, sister Mary, brothers in law, sisters in law, auntie Kathleen, nephews, nieces, relatives and a very large circle of friends.
His funeral was on Tuesday morning at the Church of The Immaculate Conception, Termonfeckin
