DROGHEDA TOWN DUBLIN CELTIC 6 2

FORMER Athlone Town striker Darren Kavanagh helped himself to a hat-trick as Drogheda Town hit AUL opponents Dublin Celtic for six to book their place in round four of the FAI Junior Cup on Friday night.

The Boynesiders lost their first-choice goalkeeper Bryan Smith after he was injured in the warm-up at Blackstone Motors Marian Park, but that had no effect as Navan native Kavanagh (2) and Ciaran Cluskey Kelly scored to send Town into a 3-0 lead inside half an hour.

The capital side pulled a goal back after Town failed to clear from a free kick, but the home side cancelled that out to lead 4-1 at the break after Andrew Tinley’s glancing header from a Roy Kierans cross found the net.

Kavanagh completed his hattrick early in the second half, and although Celtic pulled another goal back the final say went to the Drogheda side as Marty Walsh made it six.

Although he didn’t get on the scoresheet, former Drogheda United man Kierans was the star player for Robbie Horgan’s team, who aren’t in action this changed after a controversial decision around the 65-minute mark. Brown seemed to collect a high ball into the box and grasp it cleanly in his hands, but there was a collision with a Carrick player and after consulting with his assistant the referee booked Brown for a push and awarded a penalty.

Carrick’s spot kick taker stepped up to beat Brown and five minutes later ‘Well defender Gaz Smith, who had been booked for protesting the penalty decision, got a second yellow card for a sliding challenge.

For the next 10 minutes the ‘Well had to weather a storm of pressure as relegation-threatened Carrick sensed they could yet get something out of the game. coming weekend.

However, they will hope they can carry this kind of form into the league after a disappointing start to their campaign in the LSL Major Sunday division.

However, the visitors survived and struck for a third time with an excellent solo effort from Devine before adding a fourth when Devine made it a personal contribution of two goals and two assists with the pass for Brandon Sullivan to score.

The result leaves Carrick bottom of the table and looking favourites for relegation, while the ‘Well will want to finish their season on a high when they play their final fixture at home to title challengers Boyne Harps this Friday.
