EMU heroes hungry for more cups

- SCHOOLBOY LEAGUE FIXTURES

EAST Meath United Galaxy Under-13s and Devils Under-12s both remain on course to complete a North Dublin Schoolboy League double this season after picking up silverware in the knockout competitions recently.

Galaxy had to do it the hard way and come from behind after going a goal down against Killegland of Ashbourne in the Joe Kirby Cup Final played at Oscar Traynor Park.

Killegland took the lead after five minutes thanks to a volley from their number 8 Zach Thornton which looped over the EMU keeper Oisin Black, and they held this lead until mid-way through the second half.

EMU eventually got themselves back in the game thanks to an equalising goal from Nathan O’Kelly, and a second goal followed soon after, scored by the calm and majestic Ryan McBrearty. That turned out to be the winner as EMU took the Cup back to Minnistown.

James McElligott won the Man of the Match award in that game and also deserving of a mention is the coaching team of Damien O’Kelly and Glen Smith.

Later in the day it was the turn of EMU Under-12 Devils who were facing Willows of Finglas in the David Costello Cup decider.

Devils, fully prepped by their coaches Paul Bacon and Sinead McDonnell, were determined to make amends for their shock defeat the previous week in the Skechers SFAI Cup and they started off the brighter.

Many chances were created but they just weren’t clinical enough to finish in front of goal - until 10 minutes before half-time, that is, when a good finish from Danny Bacon gave EMU the lead.

The boys from Minnistown went into the break knowing they could have been five or six goals up, and it was more of the same in the second half as both Evan McDonnell and Eoghan McBrearty went close on more than one occasion.

As the Devils’ legs began to tire Willows gained a bit more momentum and they took their chance and levelled the tie with five minutes remaining, sparking joyous scenes among their travelling supporters.

With extra time and possible penalties looming, neither side looked like getting the decisive goal, but then up stepped captain fantastic Conor Black who, with time almost up, hit a thundering 25-yard shot into the top corner of the net.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game - junior or senior - real Match of the Day stuff!

The final whistle sounded soon after and EMU Devils were deserving winners of the David Costello Cup, with the Man of the Match award going to the scorer Conor.

Among those present at Oscar Traynor Park for the celebrations was Mark Sheahan of MS Transport who was the main sponsor of both teams and continuously supports the club through sponsorship and club events.

He also gives his free time to coach and train a number of the club’s teams.
