Greenhills’ Under-16s enjoy a sweet victory

-

IN a week of mixed fortunes for Our Lady’s College Greenhills teams, the Under-16A side started their 2018/19 campaign with a battling win.

Winners of the 2nd Year Premier Division last year, this team are once again in the Premier ranks and a slow start saw Our Lady’s trail 8-7 to visitors Manor House from Raheny.

The hosts regrouped in the second quarter and outscored Manor House 13-8, leaving them with a four-point cushion at half-time. Gretta McEvoy was particularly effective on her introduction in this quarter.

Abby Rice and Ava Briscoe contributed in the third period to leave Our Lady’s 28-20 ahead, and despite being outscored in the final quarter the Drogheda ladies hung on to win 36-29. Ciara NicCríosta was outstanding, scoring 15 points, but the team will need to improve on this performance if they are to lift silverware this season.

On Thursday St Louis High School of Rathmines also travelled to Greenhills and their Under-16C team defeated the hosts 44-18 in a Division 2 match. Despite trailing 18-2 at the half-way point, Our Lady’s never gave up, with captain Ronke Olatinwo leading by example as the second half proved considerably closer.

The Our Lady’s Under-19A team also took on St Louis and they started with Oyin Adelegan registering her team’s first two baskets on the way to a 13-2 first-quarter lead. Lindsey Eriamietor was prominent in the second quarter along with point guard Eimear Clarke, and although Our Lady’s couldn’t sustain that sort of momentum they still ran out 31-19 winners.
