Any news or interesting items welcome in this column, births, birthdays, engagements, weddings, sports/ social/special events etc. Please have all information to me by 10pm on Thursday evenings. Scoil Naomh Feichin ( well done on the 5th Green Flag), Junior Play School, high standards of litter control, these were all very impressive to the adjudicators. If there are negatives, then they should be considered as suggestions going forward. Seapoint needs some work but this will happen due to the recent announcement of €100,000 in funding. Some road and direction signs need maintenance. Some of the historical features need signage from a tourism perspective. Ongoing roadworks caused some concerns.

Biodiversity is huge in the competition and there were plenty of suggestions where improvements could be made. School children could be more involved in nature projects, ie bat monitoring, species counts. The adjudicators did suggest that the Tidy Towns committee undertake a recruitment drive to boost its membership and the number of volunteers. This is a very positive report and this year Termonfeckin scored 255 marks out of 450, an increase of 7 points on last year. Very well done to all concerned and you should be very proud of what you achieved. signs were cleaned and well presented.

The use of bird boxes, the Little Tern habitat, Bug Hotel, a very high standard of litter control and involvement of children from Scoil Naomh Feichin were areas that came in for very strong praise. A very strong point is the amount of wildflower planting which creates a lot of colour in the village. Local businesses also highlighted a strong response to environmental awareness and sustainability. Biodiversity and a focus on Nature continues to be a huge part of the Tidy Towns competition and there were plenty of suggestions on how this can be approved, particularly where native seeds could be sown and harvested for future use. Some concerns the adjudicators had focused on resurfacing, the need for more signage and the road towards the Haven/Beach.

The remarks again were generally positive with plenty of suggestions to consider. In saying that, Baltray scored 251 marks out of 450, an increase of 10 points on last year. So well done to all in Baltray on their efforts and you should be very proud on what you have achieved. winners were Aoife Greene, Jim Cullen, Maeve Joyce, Derek Carolan and Una Mc Gorry. The jackpot is now worth €2,100 and is sponsored by Madden’s Centra, Termonfeckin.
