John Bruton to deliver talk
FORMER Taoiseach, Mr John Bruton will give a talk this Monday, 19 November, at the Monasterboice Inn ( Donegan’s) at 8 p.m. entitled ‘John Redmond ( 1856-1918): A Patriot and Courageous Politician and his Times’. The is hosted by the Co Louth Archaeological & Historical Society and there is a voluntary subscription at the door.
John Redmond ( 1856–1918), was an Irish nationalist politician, barrister and M.P. He was best known as leader of the constitutional Irish Parliamentary Party from 1900-18. Redmond was also leader of the Irish National Volunteers. He was a conciliatory politician who achieved the two main objectives of his political life: party unity and, in September 1914, the passing of the Irish Home Rule. However, its implementation was suspended due to the Great War. Redmond called on the National Volunteers to join Irish Regiments of the British Army and to support the Allied war effort.
