DELIGHT AS HARESTOWN RUN AWAY WITH GARDA TITLE!

- By HUBERT MURPHY

THE eight annual garda schools sports day proved another huge success at the O’Raghallaigh’s last week, with St Patrick’s Harestown NS from Monasterboice claiming the Tom Connolly Memorial Trophy.

Tullyallen claimed the Tom Connolly Memorial Shield for the most sporting school.

There was huge competition for the title amongst the high number of schools that took part, but Harestown proved a step ahead of the rest.

With members of the St John Ambulance on hand to tend to any injuries, the event ran very smoothly with Mayor Frank Godfrey on hand to present the prizes with Tom Connolly’s wife Trish and son, Andrew.

‘It was just like the Olympics,’ Frank remarked.

Garda Eugene Mulligan explained that the day honoured Tom Connolly, the first community guard in the town who did so much work in the schools.

Eugene was also pretty popular when he announced that there would be no homework for a week if the gardai beat the teachers in a tug o war and the gardai duly delivered! Educate Together won the best artwork event.
