FOOTBALL FAN DAVID DIES IN DENMARK

TRIBUTES are being paid to the Drogheda man who drowned in Denmark while visiting the country for Monday’s Nations League clash.

The body of 30-year-old David Clerkin was found at Havnegade, a waterfront area in the centre of Copehagen on Sunday morning.

He was in Denmark for the match which takes place in Aarhus.

Local police confirmed that divers from the Copenhagen Fire Department removed him from the water shortly after 10.30am on Sunday morning.

He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Republic of Ireland team will wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence during the match as a mark of respect.

In a statement, the FAI said it was ‘deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a Republic of Ireland supporter in Denmark.

‘ The FAI has expressed its condolence­s to the family of the supporter, who passed away in Copenhagen.

‘An official request has been submitted to UEFA, by the FAI, to hold a minute’s silence before kick-off in tonight’s game in Aarhus.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoma­n said: ‘ The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade cannot comment on individual cases, however, we can confirm we are providing consular assistance to the family of an individual in Copenhagen.’
